Les + Jan Bell - Photographers Diary - Nov. 2007

29 November 2007 - Warkworth Beach, Northumberland.

This afternoon we walked along Warkworth Beach to the breakwater on the north side of the River Coquet at Amble. It was nearly sunset on a very cold but fine day but a few people were out walking, as seen on the view of the beach below.

A visitor to the area was a Trinity House survey ship moored near Coquet Island, seen in the second photo below.

The third photo shows the fishing boat Solan entering the River Coquet and the fourth is a view of the River Coquet at sunset.

23 November 2007 - Port of Blyth, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited the Port of Blyth late in the afternoon to take some photos of ships unloading at Battleship Wharf and the Alcan Dock, around sunset and after dark at Blyth Quayside.

In the first photo the cargo ship Traun is offloading Aluminium Ore at the Alcan Dock, glowing in the late sunshine. The same ship is seen in the last photo from Blyth Quay after dark.

In the second photo the cargo ships Marina and Sea Hawk are unloading coal at Battleship Wharf.

The third and fourth photos are views of sunset from the Bates Jetties and moonrise over the wind turbines at Seven Stars.

11 November 2007 - St. Mary's Island, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth, Tyne & Wear Coast.

This afternoon we walked along the cliffs from Seaton Sluice in Northumberland to St. Mary's Island in Tyne and Wear (it used to be in Northumberland). It was fine but very cold and the strong wind was still whipping up the sea.

We could see that further down the coast at Tynemouth the waves were still breaking over the pier so we decided to drive along there after our walk. The waves were indeed as large as they had been when we visited on Friday.

Below are two photos, the first is a view of St. Mary's Island at high tide and the second is a view of Tynemouth Pier from below the Priory, where the sea was very rough indeed.

09 November 2007 - Tynemouth, Tyne & Wear Coast.

Today we went to Tynemouth to take photos of the high tide and rough sea. It was a spectacular sight with the sea blasting over Tynemouth pier, sounding like an explosion each time it hit.

Sea traffic continued though, undeterred by the conditions as this series of shots shows.

The first photo shows the sea breaking against the pier, while in the second view one of the Tyne Pilot boats gets a rough ride around the lighthouse. It was followed a few minutes later by the cargo ship "City of Nordic" which was obviously empty and swaying heavily from side to side as it entered the River Tyne.

Later, after sunset, we took some views up the River Tyne when the sky became very colourful and the lights added sparkle to the scene.

06 November 2007 - Scald Hill, Cheviot Hills, Northumberland.

Today we went walking in the Cheviot Hills in North Northumberland. We walked from Langleeford in the Harthope Valley up Scald Hill and then down the steep path to Langleeford Hope and back along the valley.

It was another beautiful clear Autumn day and from the hills you could see for many miles around including the Northumberland Coast about fifteen miles away.

Below is a view from the top of Scald Hill overlooking the Harthope Valley. Although you can't make it out in the photo, Bamburgh Castle can be seen from here. The second photo is a view from the valley up a bracken covered hillside.

03 November 2007 - Druridge Bay and Hauxley, Northumberland Coast.

This afternoon we went for a walk along the beach at the north end of Druridge Bay to Hauxley.

The sea was very calm like the proverbial millpond and the tide was a long way out - almost low tide.

Below are a couple of photos looking out to the horizon near Hauxley Haven. In the second photo the rocks look like a pair of giants' shoes left in a pool by the tide.

02 November 2007 - North Blyth, Northumberland.

This afternoon we visited North Blyth for some late afternoon photos at jetties where the old Seven Stars Pub used to be. It was almost sunset and some dark clouds were moving overhead and apart from the sound of demolition over the river, very quiet with not much river traffic.

In the first photo below a fishing boat sails up the river past Blyth Quayside as the sun was setting. The second photo shows the cargo ship Sea Hawk slipping almost silently down the river and out to sea.
